While at my sister’s house last weekend, I was prepping scrambled eggs on her kitchen countertop.
As my sister walked past, she placed a small stand next to me and reminded me to not place the used skillet on the counter. Whipping my head around, confused, I asked why I needed the small stand for the hot pan while cleaning the stove. The bewildered look on her face said it all – I had something she thought I should know. Which was this: Hot items and skillets should not be placed on the kitchen counter. And the answer to why was that it could cause burns or warping!
Shockingly, I had NEVER heard this before!
How am I, an adult woman, learning this for the first time now? What else do I not know? Or to my sister…what common sense am I lacking?
In the spirit of sharing, here are two other times when I needed to learn a lesson twice. And somehow, both involve cars!
First up is the time I locked my car keys in my car, two days in a row, at the same store. How does someone forget their keys in their car, twice? If I could go back in time and ask myself that, I would. Luckily, the business I was visiting was next to an auto shop. The auto shop took pity on me and popped my car door open. After that, I was too embarrassed to ever go back.
The second embarrassing story is the time I had my car towed two days in a row. From the same spot, no less. I have a valid excuse for this one. I was tired and forgot my car on the street instead of parking in the assigned spot. Yup, that is my excuse for the first time. I have no excuse for the second!
I should probably steer clear of both cars and hot items, but life tempts me.
People say that common sense isn't so common. But is it that, or is it that we just haven't had the right life experiences to teach us a fact another person has lived?
Or maybe we are human, and we all make silly mistakes because that is part of life?
